In Mid-January, 65 Sai no Kami Festivals are held throughout Itoigawa City.
The size and shape of the pyre differs from region to region. Some regions also feature unique traditions, like in the Taya District where children are tasked with lighting the fire while their parents playfully attempt to stop them. These festivals offer a valuable opportunity to see the unique personalities of each region.
Some regions have agreed to allow outside visitors view the festivities and others even encourage participation in the creation and lighting of the Sai no Kami pyre. Please check the schedule, calendar and map for more information about these opportunities.
